We are heartsick. Mom's tumor has returned and is growing fairly rapidly. We met with the surgeon on Monday and yesterday with the radiologist. We are so torn at what to do. The kind of cancer she has does not respond very well to radiation and not at all to chemo.
Because the tumor is right next to her spinal cord, there are many risks. If she doesn't have the radiation she could soon be paralyzed and then I couldn't take care of her. She would have extreme pain again too. If she does have it, there are the possibilities of many side effects. We are praying for wisdom and are asking for prayers that we make the right decision and have peace about it.

I'm so sorry, Joan. You, your family, and your Mom will be in my prayers.
Joan, so sorry to hear about your mom's reoccurance with the tumor. I know these are tough decisions and you will get a lot of advice, none of which is the same. I would go forward with the radiation. It's not going to be curative but it will be palliative and her being comfortable and doing what she wants to do in her last days is the most important thing. It will be treatment by treatment and if it turns out to be something she does not want to do any longer, than she doesn't have to. It's not totally one way or the other, it's more like step by step. Keeping her home with you as independent and pain free as possible sounds like what is going to make her happy. I'll pray you reach the decision that works best for her.
I agree with Holly....the big thing is her comfort. I will keep your Mom in my prayers.
You have my prayers. Gods strength and Love be with you.
Joan I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. Your decision will not be easy but with everyones prayers and positive thoughts I know you will do what is best.

Joan, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Oh Joan. I'm so sorry. I read on Selma's blog that you were thinking of bringing her to Bloomington for the proton Therapy. You know that I live here and if there is anything I can do please let me know. My husband actually works in the proton therapy building. He's a nuclear physicist but he's on the experimental side rather than the medical side. My prayers are with you, your Mom and family. Please if there is anything I can do don't hesitate to ask.
Hugs,
Donna (drinckel@yahoo.com)
