Beautiful Michigan

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

I am taking a nice restful vacation in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I will be attending a Card Gathering with the UP group and visiting with our best friends who own a home on Lake Superior. I will let you know when I return and I will have lots of fun things to tell you I am sure.

Have a great time while I am gone!

Sweet Pickles for a Sweet Friend

Sunday, July 26, 2009
I have added the recipe below!

When visiting a friends house, she served the best Sweet Pickles. I was sure the pickles had cloves in them. I searched and searched for a recipe but didn't have any luck. One day a friend of mine was visiting and I told her about these delicious pickles. She said "Joan, I have a great recipe for sweet pickles and they have cloves in them." So, I made two batches and enjoyed them all winter.

Next week I am visiting with friends and I want to take her a little bag of goodies. JustRite
has a wonderful new stamp set for those of us who like to cook, can and preserve food. This
stamp was perfect for my jar of Sweet Pickles. I hope to have time to do some beans too before we leave.

I love what Kellie Fortin from JustRite did to introduce this new stamp set and I decide to use her idea as my starting point. Great job Kellie!

I stamped the image, colored it with my Copic markers, cut and embossed it with the scalloped Nesties, added a darker border to set off the image. After cutting two coordinating strips of paper, I used my Martha Stewart punches on both ends to decorate the jar. The strips were then attached to the jar, along with the image that I popped up with some dimensionals.

I stamped the same image again, except I removed the outer circle. This is one thing I love about the JustRite stamps, they are so versatileand interchangeable. I applied this image under the canning jar ring and screwed it on tight. Then I glued a piece of green gingham ribbon all the way around the ring and used the Bow Easy to make a double bow.

There won't be a sale posted tonight, because I will be leaving Wednesday for the UP in Michigan. But, I will be back for the posting on the 10th of August. Hopefully all the JustRite and Flower Soft things will be in by then so I can get them shipped off to you. The Fall Harvest and Thinking of you are on back order, so I am waiting for them.

Recipe for Clove Sweet Pickles
75 cucumbers about 1 peck -- (3-3 1/2 inch)
2 c coarse pickling salt
1 gallon water
powder alum
10 c sugar
5 c vinegar
18 drops cinnamon oil
18 drops clove oil
1 T celery seed

Place cucumbers in a stone jar, glass or enameled container. Combine salt and 1 gallon water. Bring to boil and pour over cucumbers.
Cover with a plate and weight down. Brine must cover pickles. Keep stirring water every day to prevent mold. If mode exists at the end of 8 days, rinse well. It will not hurt the pickles.
Let pickles set until the 8th day and on the 8th rinse well and cut in to either slices or chunks. I chunk mine. Return to container.
Mix up 1 gallon water and 1 T powdered alum and bring to boil. Pour over pickles. Repeat this 4 times.
On the 12th day drain and rinse pickles. Combine sugar, vinegar and celery seed and bring to a boil. At this time I add a few drops of green food coloring to give the pickles a nice fresh look. Repeat this for 2 more days.
On the 14th day pack cucumbers in hot glass jars. Bring syrup to boil and pour over cucumbers that are in the jars. Process in boiling water bath for 5 minutes. Remove jars from canner and listen for a pop to make sure they are sealed. Makes 12 to 14 pint

A Bowl Full of Cherries

Friday, July 24, 2009

It's Friday and time for another challenge by the Stamp Simply group. You can read about it here. Be sure to check out all the DT too. There are some really cute cards out there!

Today's challenge is to use something with Fruit. Thanks to Tammy, I found Basic Grey's new Lemonade 6x6 Paper Pad has this adorable cherry print in it, as well as the lime green. I have been wanting to use this cute 1960's vintage little girl by Crafty Secrets ever since I got it in. This print really called out for her.

First I cut my card stock to make a 5x5 square card (love that size), attached the Lemonade Paper to it. Then using the Labels 2, I cut out the lime green border with the largest die and ran it through the Large Dots Cuttlebug Embossing Folder. "Nancy" (that is who she reminds me of) was stamped with Black Memento on Neenah Cream Paper. I colored her using my Copic markers and then cut and embossed the image with the next size down in the Spellbinders Label 2 set.

Before taking it out of the die, I used my new Jumbo daubers and "dab" some Ranger Heritage Ink around it to make it look more aged. After attaching it to the lime green border, I popped it up on the DP with the Therm-O-Web Dimensionals. May Arts silk ribbon is a perfect color and I used the Bow Easy to tie the double bow.

Feeling it needed some more texture, I added the new Lemonade Brads (cut the backs off and adhered with glue dots.) on to the bottom border that was cut with Martha Stewart's Scalloped Border punch.

Black and White Fantasy

This card was made for the Stamp Simply challenge. You can read about it here.

I started with a 5.5 card using Neenah white card stock. The Fantasy image by Penny Black was stamped with
Black Versa Fine Ink on another piece of Neenah paper. Spellbinder's largest Label One was perfect to use for cutting out and embossing the image.

Then I used JustRite's newest 1 3/16 Damask Stamp for the monogram. I sure do love this little guy as it is a perfect size for a card that has a large image stamped on it. The J is for a good friend whose birthday is coming up next week. The Dahlia die by Spellbinders was used to cut out the monogram and then I softly inked the edges before taking it out of the die for more impact.

Martha Stewart"s Lattice Punch made a perfect bottom border . I punched both ends of the paper. I felt the DP I used was too busy, so I added a small strip of the polka dot to offset the busyness

Using SU's ticket punch I punched each corner of the polka dot DP and then glued it down with my Glue Glider. I don't know if you can see the clear crystals that accents the tree, but this was a perfect finishing touch. Of course a small bow seemed be a necessity. The image and monogram are popped up with Thermo-O Web dimensionals.

Glitter and Purple

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

This card is full of glitter although you can't see it very well. Each rose on the paper is glittered.
I chose this paper for the
Stamp Simply Friday challenge because we were to use glitter on our card.

The base is 5.5x5.5 Neenah card stock and then each layer was decreased by 1/4 of an inch.
I just received the new Renaissance Pendant dies from Spellbinders (the Borderabilities are arriving today so all will be shipped tomorrow). I used two of the dies the same size, scored the top one with my Scor-It and then folded it to give it dimension. A piece of the 1.5 silk ribbon was attached to the DP using my Glue Glider and wrapped underneath before attaching it to the white card stock. This gives a much cleaner look.

I love the new Thinking of You Stamp Set from JustRite (feature on Monday's sale). I stamped The Thinking of You on matching plain DP, cut it out with the Oval Petite Nestie and then bordered it with the Scalloped Oval Nestie. I popped it up with some Dimensionals, attached the beautiful silk bow and it was done.

Enjoy Life by Penny Black

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

This card was one of those that took me forever to finish, but I was pleased when it was completed.
I started with a 5.5x5.5 card stock, cut the DP at 5.25 and then the Simple Scallop Border punch was used. I didn't want anything fancy on the bottom, just something "simple" and this punch fit that qualification.

The striped paper was a small strip that was in my scrap drawer and it accented the DP very nicely. Then it was time to stamp. I love the new Enjoy Life Stamp set by Penny Black and I wanted to add some depth to it, so Flower Soft was a perfect addition. After the image was completely dry, I ran it through the Wizard using the Swiss Dots Cuttlebug embossing folder.
What a difference that made! Texture adds so much interest, don't you think? Petite Scallop Nestie was used under the oval image, tying the colors all together.

Be sure to check out Selma's blog to see the gorgeous cards (keep scrolling down) she has made with the Enjoy Life Penny Black Stamp. I love how she curls the flowers as it give so much dimension to them. She also loves the Cuttlebug Embossing folders.

JustRite Tiny works stamp was stamped and then cut out with the Small Circle Nestie. I cut a flourish out with my Cricut and added one under the sentiment. Three orange brads were added for interested and then I colored a white Satin ribbon with a Copic marker to match the DP and used my wonderful Bow Easy that I got from Sharon Johnson's Stamp Simply Store.
