Peonies

Don't you just love Peonies? This pink single Peony is so beautiful and makes such a nice addition to my garden. I got the starts from my Mom, so they mean a lot to me. I also have a dark red, white and solid double peony and they line the back of our house next to the deck.

Thanks for visiting me in my garden today. I just love this time of year although it really takes me a way from my crafting time.

Update on Melanie

Saturday, May 30, 2009
Everyday we are seeing improvement with Melanie. The Rehab facility has been fantastic.
I am copying a message sent to me from her sister, Jen. Thank you again for all your prayers.
She truly is a miracle from God!

DOCTORS: Again the doctor is pleased that Mel's right side is responding to therapy so well.

SPEECH THERAPY: You guessed it. Mel beat her ST goals today. We also had the therapist copy some handouts to keep working over the weekend.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY: Yep. Mel worked on her neck, shoulders and right arm with stretches and strengthening exercises. She added a few more moves to her Self Range of Motion Exercises for the Arm and Neck.

PHYSICAL THERAPY: Holy cow! Once they cut the cast off, Mel was speed walking around the unit [400 foot track]. She didn't stop there either. She had another go at the treadmill. This time she was unassisted and did three rounds of walking [25 minutes of walking]. But she was tasked with stretching her left foot as now she is cast free until her brace arrives on Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.

White Bleeding Heart

Thursday, May 28, 2009

Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved my Mom's pink bleeding heart. Two years ago, my daughter Lori bought me a white bleeding heart. For some reason (cold weather I think) it did not bloom as well as last year, but it is still beautiful. In front of it, I have a sedum and the dark green plant with the burgundy center is called Joe Pye Weed Snake Root Plant. This plant gets a beautiful white flowers on it about August. I will be sure and take a picture of it then too.
You can see that I use Cocoa Beans for mulch. Talk about smelling good..ymmmm! Chocolate all day long.

Chives

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Chives are beautiful when they bloom. The blooms last a long time too. When the flowers start to die, I pinch them off because otherwise, I would have chives all over the place.

We had a rain storm last night with pretty heavy wind and the chives blew over and are almost flat today. I am glad I took the picture before that happened.

The lime green flower next to it is a foam plant. I am really into lime colored flowers. Can't you tell???

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you are having some beautiful weather.

Sedium

This is one of my favorite plants. It is a variegated (yellow and green) sedum.
It grows any where...sun or shade. You can cut off the tops and stick it in the grown and it grows. If a solid green shoot comes up in it, you must pull it out or it will all go back to the wild.
I love to stick it among my other shade plants because it adds a lot of color. Usually about the 1st of June, I start pinching back the top of it so it doesn't get too big and fall over. At times, I have taken those pieces I pinched back, stuck them in the ground and they grow. A great plant for any level of gardener.

Name This Flowering Bush

Saturday, May 23, 2009

This yellow bush is a mystery bush to Mom and I. A friend gave it to her and eventually, I was able to get a start. The flower almost looks like a rose, as well as does the leaf. A sample of it
was sent to Purdue University and they also could not identify it.
Any ideas anyone?

Pond

Friday, May 22, 2009

One of our favorite things to do in the summer is to sit by our pond and listen to the
rush of water from the waterfall. Right now I am busy trying to get my flowers planted,
so I have not had time to make any cards. Yesterday, I realized how many cards I need to make
in June and I wonder how I will ever get it done with all of the outside work there is to do.

The lattice wall is the west side of our barn. When Jon told me we had to put metal siding on it, I was just sick as I love the quaint look of the old wood. He also told me he would do anything I wanted to make the barn look good after siding it. What a guy!!

I saw the lattice idea somewhere and so one year he did the lattice and the next year he put the roof overhang over it. It really captures the feeling I wanted. I will be showing other views of the pond in the next few days.

Address for Melanie

Tuesday, May 19, 2009
Many of you have asked for Melanie's new address.
Please send cards to:
Melanie Smith
RIC Room 826
345 E. Superior Street
Chicago, Il 60611

What a powerful affect we can have on Melanie if we shower her with lots of cards.
Just tell her you are Joan Fricker's friend. This way she can relate who is sending her cards.

I just received a call from Andy (Mel's Mom) and last night Mel used her right hand to brush her teeth and this morning she got a call from Mel. Not an understandable one, but she is starting to make sounds as of last night. Praise the Lord and to Him be the Glory!!!!!

Update on Melanie

Below are some excerpts from e-mails sent to me from Andy, Mel's Mom.

1st full day in Chicago
What a blessing Melanie is here in Chicago! They intend for Melanie to get back home as soon as possible. Now.....are you ready for this.........the last part of her physical therapy they had Melanie standing at the parallel bars. They sat her back down and commented that she was tired, but asked if she would like to try one more time. She nodded yes.....they are aggressive.....she is determined. They got her standing again! Her neck and shoulders are very tight.....but they told her to try and raise her head while she was standing.....I was at the other end....she looked up at me.......WOW!

Sunday morning
From Andy
Several of us are going up today to visit with Melanie, and I can't wait to see her. I have missed her and Jeni. (Jeni is Mel's oldest sister and has stayed with her all the time she has been in Chicago, sleeping in a recliner)

Jeni said that yesterday afternoon, she and Melanie were at the computer, Melanie was able to use the mouse and scroll. Jeni was looking at the pictures of the kids that are posted on Jenny Hoke's website. Melanie was also looking at this website. It appeared to Jeni that she was reading things from the website, but not sure yet. Will have to ask questions today to see if she remembers being on the website, and if she was able to read. Every time I see her I see changes and improvements. Can't wait for today.

Everytime I receive an e-mail the news just keeps getting better. Mel has come so far in such a short time. She still has a long way to go as her left side is totally parylized and she can't talk, but to see where she was and where she has come is nothing more than a miracle. God has answered everyone's prayers and to Him be the glory!!!!

Mr and Mrs. Todd Jarvis

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Todd and Kelsey. Aren't they a beautiful couple? We are so happy for them.
The wedding was held at the Waterfront on Paw Paw lake. It was to be an outside wedding, but
we were blessed with wet rain, so it was moved inside. Not even rain could dampen our spirits for this special night. And, God so graciously blessed us with stopping the rain as Kelsey and Kara (sister and bridesmaid) walked into the wedding.
