Birthday Card

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

My youngest Granddaughter's birthday is this week and I made this card for her.
She loves pink and bright colors and I thought these beautiful papers, Garden Tour and
Tennis Court by Bridgeport are just perfect for her card. Again, I wish I could capture
the beauty on these papers. Both have a raised effect and very nice and heavy. These
papers will make great boxes which I hope to soon get done.

I colored the Inkadinkdo Classic Botanical image with my Copic markers and added some Pink Rhinestones (which I will be featuring for next Monday's sale) for extra pizazz. I like the side panel that I punched with Martha Stewart's Arch Lattice Punch. I have never done it that way and I think it looks pretty nifty! What are your thoughts?

Gorgeous Paper

Saturday, March 28, 2009

I so wish I could capture the beauty of this paper (check out the link so you can see it better).
If you can just imagine the part that looks white being silver and raised slightly. And, you can't see it very well, but I used the new Spellbinders Ric Rac Scallop Pieceabilities die to cut the bottom of the DP. It is embossed and pierced. Next time I will use it on solid card stock. It does look pretty IRL, but doesn't photograph very well.

I wanted the beautiful DP to show, so I kept the card very simple. I added Crystals in the middle of the large flowers and I used my new Labels 4 Nestie for the sentiment.

I attended a stamp show a few weeks ago and I purchased a spray called Paper Glide Paper Treatment Mist that you spray on your card stock before embossing it. Wow, what a difference it makes, especially using the Cuttlebug.
I will be offering this spray in the near future. I really like it.

Paper------------------Sunday Paper by Bridgeport
Stamp------------------Nature and Floral Repositional Stamp Set by Inkadinkado

By the way, Sharon Johnson has added the most gorgeous ribbon to her ribbon list today. Be sure and take a look, it is wonderful!

Clear Stamp Wall

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Several of you asked me to take pictures of the inside of the shop.
I wish I had a wide angle lens so I could get a larger shot and one
that would give you an idea of how pretty it looks.

This wall holds the clear stamps. Remember the shop is not very big, but I try to carry things that I think my customers will enjoy. As I said before, if you are in the area give me a call (e-mail me for the telephone number) to set up your personal appointment with me.

Inside Joan's Gardens

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

I have had several request for some pictures of the inside of my shop. This picture shows the colors and decor. I will try to take some more pictures today to show how things are set up.

This chest of drawers was in our barn when we purchased the property. It had been in a fire and was all black and charred on the outside. I thought it turned out very pretty with some hard work. The drawers don't open well, but I just use it for display, so it doesn't matter.

I hope to be back later this afternoon with some more pictures.

Edited: I took more pictures late yesterday afternoon and they did not turn out to my satisfaction as there was too much glare. I want to wait until it is sunny and I hope to get a better picture.

Teegarden

Thursday, March 19, 2009

My Dad and Mom owned a grocery store and our home was attached to it. I am very fortunate to have pictures of the building in the early 1900's. The front porch is still there and all the time I was growing up, it was the town hangout. It looks like it was back in the 1900's too. When it was first built, it was a saloon and from what I am told, a pretty rough place.
My Mom and Dad bought it in 1945 and Dad operated the grocery store until he retired in the early 80's. When I was a child, it was a booming place, because of the grain elevator and the milk plant. But, once farming changed and the elevator burned down the milk plant closed. We soon saw a decrease in activity in our little town and today the only business left is Mom's little Quilt shop.
We all knew everyone in town, but that certainly is not true anymore. People come and go and things just are not like they used to be. I have such fond memories of growing up in Teegarden.
Please click on the layout too enlarge it so you can to read the text.
Thanks for stopping by to visit me. I appreciate any and all comments.
What memories do you have of your child hood home?

Layered Fiesta Casserole

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Tonight is one of those nights that my wonderful hubby doesn't know what time he will be home.
So, on those nights I try to fix something for dinner that will hold over until he arrives.
And, I am busy reorganizing things in my shop for spring so it needed to be something easy and quick.

Last fall we visited my sister-in-law, Shirley and she served this wonderful casserole. It is easy and is enough for a couple meals for us. I thought you might enjoy the recipe too.

1 lb. extra lean ground beef
1 med. green pepper, chopped
1 med. onion, chopped
1 jar Thick 'N Chunky Salsa (16 oz)
1 can diced tomatoes (14 1/2 oz) drained
1 pkg frozen corn (10 oz) thawed
12 corn tortillas (6 in.)
1 1/2 c. shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 375.
Brown meat w/peppers in large skillet; drain. Stir in salsa, tomatoes and corn. Bring to boil.
Spoon 1+ c. meat mixture in bottom of 13 x 9 baking pan. Top w/6 tortillas, overlapping as necessary. Spoon half of the meat mixture over tortillas; top w/half the cheese. Do another layer, ending with the rest of the cheese.Cover w/foil. (I use more cheese than it calls for)
Bake 25 - 30 min or until heated through. Uncover and slightly brown the top. It holds over in the oven for a while.

Garden Tour Card

Saturday, March 14, 2009

I don't know when I have been so excited about a new of line paper (for me) called Bridgeport.
I so wish I could capture the beauty on camera. I have used three patterns: polka dots, floral and stripes. The patterns are slightly raised with almost a vinyl effect. It is very nice heavy DP.

I used two sizes of Nesties Label 2 to make the frame. I stamped the image from the Nostalgia stamp set on the paper I am also using for the white mat. I colored it with Copic Markers. I wanted to use a bit of the stripe paper, so I used Martha Stewart's Diamond Punch on both sides to give it a picket fence effect.

I added a couple of ribbon tabs that I attached using brads which are the same color as the green in the frame. I wanted a simple sentiment so that I can send it to a good friend who is having health issues.

I will be featuring all of these items on my Monday's sale.

Sharon's Friday Challenge is all about matting. Here is what she says:

Mat or frame your cards in white for a fresh, clean and springy look. You MAY use multiple mats on a panel if you like, but at least ONE of them MUST be white. That’s it — anything else goes!!! And the most important rule — HAVE FUN!!! Anyone can participate. I made the card above to fit her challenge. What fun!!

Be sure to stop by and see the beautiful card she made for this challenge and check out the list of designers that are participating in this great challenge. Also, Sharon has added several new ribbons to sell so be sure to check out her ribbon tab on the top of her blog page.

By the way, don't miss Jerri's gorgeous Magnolia Wall hanging. She designed it herself and then painted it. Notice the detail and how she makes those petals look so real Wow!!! It is marvelous.

Easter Joy

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

I don't usually use many pastels in my card making, because I am a bright color person. But,
I just love these little Easter bunnies from the
Easter Joy Stamp set by Crafty Secrets (shown below) and I had this Easter Egg paper for several years. I thought it all went together very nicely. I tried to fit the Easter egg on the card, but it just took away from it, so I used it as a prop for taking a picture of the card.

I used Martha Stewart's Diamond Punch and cut out two layers, one in a brighter pink and one in green and overlayed them. It looks really cool IRL. I colored the bunnies with my Marvy Water Color Pencils to give them the nice soft pastel look they so deserved.

By the way, be sure to take a look at Sharon's card today where she again used the Mindscapes Inkadinkado Stamp. (shown below) It is absolutely gorgeous.

Laundry Days

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

This is another layout for my album. My good friend Marcia designed this beautiful digital scrap booking kit and had us do a layout about Laundry Days. I am old enough to remember Mom doing laundry with a ringer washer and even used a wash board for extra dirty clothes.

Today even at 94, Mom's laundry always looks the greatest. I tell her secret on the side of the layout. It reads:

I was about 62 when Mom finally told me her secret to having very white clothes. Fill the washing machine tub up with water, add laundry soap and Clorex II and soak for20 minutes. What a difference it makes!

The card reads: This picture of me was taken when I was 6 months old. Mom is not sure if we lived at Lucky Gardens, but if so we lived in one room during this time. Lucky Gardens was a nursery that raised Gladiolas and is located just north of Knox, Indiana. Mom answered the phone, took orders and helped do lots of things for room and board. This was during and after WWII. Mom did not have a washing machine, so she did all of our laundry on a wash board. She didn’t have a dryer either, but she always enjoyed hanging the clothes out on the clothes lines. We didn’t get a washing machine until we moved to Teegarden. A pair of cement laundry tubs and a wringer washing machine were there when we moved in. Mom was thrilled to say the least. I remember helping do the laundry and I loved running the clothes through the wringer. We continued hanging out our clothes for many years before Mom got a dryer. Almost every time we would get the clothes on the line, a freight train would come through town and leave black soot on our clothes. When we heard the train coming, we would run out quickly and gather the clothes and then rehang them. This got very old and we were so glad when the freight trains were replaced with diesel trains.

Do any of you remember the days of ringer washers, wash boards and no clothes dryers? I would love for you to leave a comment and tell me about it.

Embossed Dragon Fly

Friday, March 6, 2009

Sharon's Stamp Simply challenge for Friday is to pull out those heat guns and heat emboss an image that will create a card conveying SIMPLE ELEGANCE. So, that is just what I did.
Be sure to check out all the other designers who are participating in this challenge. You can find them listed over at Sharon's.

First of all, I used Sharon's card as my starting point and added my own twist to it. Can you see that I have embossed the dragon fly with Silver Embossing Powder? It is hard to get a good picture of silver embossing.
Don't you just love the Dragon Fly? It is in the Gemstone Insects Stamp Set. There are so many things that can be done with it. I love the butterfly too.
Jerri is the queen of embossing and she plans to do an embossing tutorial in the near future. I can't wait!

Kissing- A new Technique For Me

Click to enlarge and get a better view of the Kissing Technique.
I learned a new technique (for me) yesterday called "Kissing"! This stamp is the same one that I used on the card below, but I "Kissed" it. Isn't it cool? I learned this technique from Gina at Gina Designs and you might enjoying watching her video.

I first stamped the Nature and Floral stamp (shown below for this weeks sale) with SU Certain Celery Ink and then I stamp over the green ink with a small patterned stamp inked in Versafine Black (I will have for sale next Monday). I then huffed the stamp and stamped it on Neenah White Cardstock. This is the effect I got. I just love it.

I used the Sublime Stripped paper shown before and the Label One die from Spellbinders which I will be featuring next Monday. I wanted a hint of black to accent the floral, so I used Sharon's trick and sponged my image with the Versafine Black Ink while still in the die to give the crisp, white border. Pretty neat huh?

If you need pretty ribbons, be sure to stop over at Sharon's site. She has some beautiful ribbon she is selling!! Just click on the tab at the top that says Ribbon For Sale.

Pretty Floral

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

For this card, I use all 3 of the new Cocco papers, the Curved Rectangle Nesties, and the new Nature and Floral Repositional Stamp all shown below for this weeks sale.

After stamping the floral, I cut out the striped paper with the Curved Nestie and then used the Oval Nestie to cut out the floral. I used the same Oval Nestie on the striped paper which gave it a picture framed look.

I have popped up each layer to give it dimension. I wished afterwards I would have stamped a sentiment on the floral. I was afraid that I would not get a perfect stamped image if I did it now, so I chose not to do it. I tried to add it as a separate attachment, but that didn't work either. So, I will add the sentiment on the inside.

I thought the brown Pearls by Kaiser was a nice finishing touch. What do you think?
