Melanie Smith
I am getting several e-mails wanting to know how Mel is doing, so I wanted to give you a quick update. Thank you so much for your concern!
Mel (as we call her) was running a slight temperature which showed she had some kind of infection. The doctors first thought it was an over load of milk, and then last night the nurse said it was a staph infection in the blood. Today they say they aren't sure about the staph infection and that it might be from some congestion. So, they have decided not to make any changes other than give her an antibiotic for the infection, whatever it is. They are afraid if they reduce the breathing machine and let up on her meds that could cause the congestion to get worse.
Tom (her husband) has been diagnosed with a Stress disorder and has been sent to bed. I didn't understand how the poor man was doing it all and he finally felt the results of the last several weeks. What I didn't tell you was Tom's father died on Monday and was buried on Thursday before Griffin was born on Saturday. So the poor man is ready to collapse. Their family doctor recognized this and has given him something to help him sleep and get his strength back.
The good news is that there has been no additional bleeding. We are so thankful for that.
Friends and family have been wonderful, along with all of you who are praying. We just can't thank you enough.
Someone asked me if I was close to Mel and her family. Absolutely!!! Andy (her mother) has been like a sister, therefore her children all mean the world to me. This just tears me apart to see her in such condition. Thank goodness we know our Heavenly Father is in control and our prayer is for Him to be glorified through all of this.
Thank you again!

Oh Joan, I'm literally bawling! What an incredible load to bear for her poor husband, and Mel still not out of the woods. I hope the children are doing OK. Your family continues to be in my prayers!!! Thanks for the update... I've been so anxious to hear more news! :)
Hard to believe what this poor family is going through. I'm still praying for Mel every day. Will pray for her husband as well.
Joan ~ I am still praying for Mel...please keep us in update mode to let us know how she is doing.
Oh Joan!
I will immediately start praying for Melanie and her husband! They are so young to be bearing such a heavy burden!
((hugs)))

Was about to e-mail you. Thanks for the update. Glad the bleeding has stopped. Prayer support in N. Ireland is continuing and we'll now add Tom and his new condition to our list. He was on it already but he needs us too. Thanks for posting the photo....lovely to be able to put a face to a name which has passed our lips so often in the last week or so. Take care. Love and hugs.
Thank you for giving us an update. Prayers continue to surround Mel and her husband and family, and you. Is there an address that I may send a card to Mel and Tom so they know that we care? Blessings and grace be on you and your whole family.
~ Gail
My thoughts and prayers continue for the family. The husband, Tom, is amazing and I hope he is able to get some much needed rest. I hope the children are doing OK too.
Any pictures of the baby? Is the baby OK?
I hope you hold up too. My thoughts and prayers are with you as well.
Dear Joan: I read your blog and have ordered merchandise from you in the past and feel like I know you. I am praying for Mel and her family as well as for you. Thank you for keeping us updated. I wish that the family had some way of knowing how many people are concerned and praying for Mel's complete recovery. Believing in the power of prayer and knowing that so many people are praying would certainly relieve their minds! Hang in there! - Mary R.
Oh my gosh Joan, the picture of Mel helps us to connect so much more with her. She is precious, what a beautiful girl! And God bless Tom; to lose his father, have a newborn, and then to have his soul mate become so ill, it's amazing he hasn't had a breakdown! My prayers are with him, the children, and Melanie.
Hi, Joan: Thanks so much for the update. How absolutely traumatic all of your lives are right now, but I truly believe that God's presence is with you all. After all, there is a doctor who saw Tom's suffering and took action to help him before he got any worse; Mel's bleeding has stopped; there is a community of people worldwide praying for this family - how can all of that be anything other than God at work? How are the children doing through all of this?
Please keep us apprised and please let the family know that, far and wide, many, many prayers are going to God's ear! He holds them all in His hands!

Joan, please know that my prayers and thoughts are with you and with Mel and her family. Sincerely, Beverly
Oh, the poor man! I will absolutely pray for them. Miracles happen, expect them!!
Joan,
My heart breaks for this family. I am holding them up in prayers. I am believing for a full recovery for Mel and strength for her husband and the rest of the family. It sounds like it is in the Lord's hands and I believe in the healing power of Jesus. Isaiah 53:5. Please feel free to share this scripture with your family.
Oh Joan, my heart goes out to you and this lovely young family! I will continue to keep them in my prayers and appreciate your efforts to keep us updated! I can not even begin to imagine what this poor man is going through. Prayers are being lifted up for them both ... what a load to handle!
TY si much for the update on Mel. She is indeed a beautiful girl. Will include her husband in my prayers as well. So sorry to hear about his dad. May he ask special intentions for Mel, Griffin and his son. All things are possible thru our Lord Jesus Christ. May he indeed place his hands on this family. A friend of mine had a head on collision this past Sunday with her three kids in the car. The two boys and mom are in Albany Med. Center in Albany, NY please pray for them for me. Her one little boy Connor was in extremely serious condition with head trauma. He is just the most precious little one. He is in "Kiddie College" with my grandson Keaton. Prayer means so much to all of us here and I truly believe in it. TY ahead of time for your prayers everyone. And please know I will continue praying for Mel and family Joan. ekc
Joan, My heart breaks for this husband, and the entire family. I am continuing to pray for a miracle, where God can be glorified. We know that God has a plan, we might not understand, but he will see us through. Tears are filling my eyes as I think of this dear family. Please know that I continue to pray for all of you.
Hugs...to help you through.
Marge
I will keep Mel and her family in prayers.
Thank you again for the update, Joan. We will still keep this family in my prayers. Please tell them that so many are praying for them and give them a hug from all of you blogger friends. God bless you all.
praying for you & your family friends!! this story just breaks my heart & please know we are praying for her.
we just got some terrible news tonight that my husbands Grandma suddenly passed and I just don't know what to do. my heart aches as I've never lost anyone that I am close with. it makes me so sad - even though I know she is in a better place.
sending you hugs & thanking you for the updates. God is so good and IS the God of miracles!
I just wanted to say that I am thinking about you. Last summer my husband was hurt while working(there was a rock burst underground, a 50lb rock cracked his scull, he too had a bleed) and ended up in the hospital(on support), while he was there he picked up a Staph infection, that wasnt found until well after he was release. It was out of control and he was back on support and MANY antibiotics. He was on the support machines(ventilator) for just under 3 weeks. I truly believe it is prayer that brought us to where we are today. Please know that and keep praying.
